Beaufort is the county seat of Beaufort County, located in South Carolina. The city was chartered in 1711, making it the second oldest city in the state.

The islands, along with Beaufort itself, are noted for their scenic location, with numerous preserved historic homes and buildings throughout the area, including many that feature the pre-Civil War architecture. Historically charming, the entire city is a welcome to a unique natural environment with modern amenities.

The St. Helena Spring Tour of Homes and A Taste of Beaufort are two other events that take place here.

While the city may be charming from a historical vantage point, it is also noted for its numerous arts and culture locations, including nearly 20 galleries that operate throughout the city, many of which have local residents who contribute. There is also the University of South Carolina Beaufort, which is home to a performing arts center that has long attracted national acts to the area.

For residents, the Beaufort County Recreation Department offers children's and adult programming, including football, baseball, softball, soccer, cheerleading and basketball. There are numerous playgrounds, tennis courts, recreational facilities and ballfields located throughout the city, including in many of the local neighborhoods.

Spending time outdoors is easy to do here with numerous parks, including the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, located right in the downtown area. There is much to enjoy about this multi-acre park, including the stunning views of the Beaufort River, the shade trees that sway in the breeze and the numerous fishing opportunities.

Other parks of note include Pigeon Point Park, a family-friendly destination Cypress wetlands, Port Royal and Live Oaks Park, with its oyster shed and fireplace that residents can use. Hunting Island State Park is one of the other options located in the city, which offers three public beaches for residents to enjoy.
