Beaufort is the county seat of Beaufort County, located in South Carolina. The city was chartered in 1711, making it the second oldest city in the state.

There is also the University of South Carolina Beaufort, which is home to a performing arts center that has long attracted national acts to the area.
For residents, the Beaufort County Recreation Department offers children's and adult programming, including football, baseball, softball, soccer, cheerleading and basketball. There are numerous playgrounds, tennis courts, recreational facilities and ballfields located throughout the city, including in many of the local neighborhoods.
