Mason, Ohio, is in the heart of Warren County – known as Ohio’s Playground. About 22 miles north of Cincinnati, Mason is a moderately sized community of over 33,000 people.

A few things that help Mason to stand out include its numerous attractions such as Kings Island Amusement Park, Mason Municipal Aquatic Center and Great Wolf Lodge and Conference Center. In 2020, the area saw $38 billion in tourist spending, contributing to 411,000 jobs.

Mason’s history began in 1803 when William Mason, a Revolutionary War veteran, purchased 640 acres of land at an auction at the price of $1,700 and in 1915, platted 16 lots on the property. By 1835, 40 more lots were platted, and the village’s name was changed from Palmyra to Mason.

Once Interstates 75 and 71 were constructed in the 1950s and ‘60s, Mason became an important trading center, growing quickly in the coming years to reach a population of over 5,000 people by 1971. At that time, the area became an official city.

Those interested can learn a great deal about the history of Mason by visiting the Mason Historical Society, which maintains the Alverta Green Museum, a home that dates to 1890 and is filled with period furniture. A Victorian home, many of the artifacts within it tell the story of the area and were donated by residents.

By far, one of the most important factors in the city’s growth was the building of Kings Island, which was founded on 1,600 acres of land in the county, allowing the theme park to open its doors on April 29, 1972. Kings Island gained national fame when two television sitcoms, The Brady Bunch and The Partridge Family, filmed episodes there.

Today’s version of Kings Island is a bit different, featuring a full 364-acre amusement park with thrill rides, a water park and lots of entertainment options for visitors. Without a doubt, it is the main attraction in and around Mason, with numerous hotels, resorts and additional entertainment venues popping up around it.

Additional attractions in the city include the Beach Waterpark, a 35-acre water park filled with live palm trees for a true tropical island feel in the heart of Ohio, and the Western & Southern Open, a tennis event that takes place in the city each year that draws in people from around the world.

Economically, Mason is reliant on tourism, but there are over 500 businesses that include many local shops and restaurants. The city is also the home of the Mason Business Center, owned by Procter & Gamble, as well as Luxottica Retail and Cintas Corporation headquarters.

Those looking to buy homes in Mason are likely to find a range of options from smaller homes to large estates, including many custom-built homes and exclusive subdivisions, including the Kensington subdivision and Heritage Club Golf Community.

Properties here tend to offer ample land and privacy, and with its short commute into Cincinnati, the city is very much an ideal location for those who work there.
