Luxury homes for sale in Newport Beach

Newport Beach, California, United States luxury homes for sale brought to you by Luxury Portfolio International®

Newport Beach is an iconic coastal community in Orange County in southern California. The town is known for its beautiful neighborhoods and luxury real estate as much as its old-school surf culture and famous surf breaks.

The coastal city is home to around 85,000 people and was settled in the early 1900s when the Pacific Electric Railway built a train station at the beach. Newport is right next to another famous surf city, Huntington Beach. Newport is also conveniently close to John Wayne Airport, the primary airport for Orange County.

Shortly after the arrival of the railroad, work on Newport Harbor began that required dredging the local estuary. Builders constructed several islands throughout the bay, such as Balboa Island, which is covered today with luxury homes, trendy shops and locally owned restaurants.

In addition to the historic Balboa Island, other neighborhoods in Newport that are home to beautiful homes include Lido Isle, Corona Del Mar and along the coast of the peninsula. Some of the homes in Newport are the largest and most luxurious in the entire county.

Residences situated inland from Crystal Cove State Beach on the south side of Newport rival the homes of other exclusive enclaves in the United States such as Bel-Air and the Hamptons on Long Island.

Newport was once well-known for its shipbuilding and other maritime pursuits, but the city's primary focus today is tourism and recreation. Some of the original estuary remains, and today that area is protected and known as the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve.

The beach at Newport, known as the Wedge, is one of the most famous venues for surfers in southern California. Interestingly, the first "surfers" at the Wedge weren't on surfboards – they bodysurfed and used flippers to ride the waves.

Some of the waves at the Wedge reach 30 feet. Anyone who is not strong enough to brave the currents can still get some amazing photographs at this iconic SoCal beach.

For a more relaxing time at the beach, residents and visitors will head to the southern side of Newport to Crystal Cove, which is sandwiched between Newport Beach on the north side and Laguna Beach on the south. Crystal Cove has retro cabins for rent, perfect for a cozy weekend with friends.

When the beach gets a little too windy and the winter winds dip just a little too low to enjoy the sand, Newport Beach is close to some of the world's most famous attractions. Newport is just a stone's throw away from Disneyland to the east and all the fun of Hollywood in Los Angeles to the north.

Anyone new to Orange County might not realize how close Los Angeles and San Diego are to Newport and other beach cities in O.C. While Newport features fantastic beaches and luxury shopping venues, the mountains and deserts are just a few hours away.

The mountain ranges to the north feature opportunities for skiing, and the deserts to the east are home to the famous Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley. Newport Beach and Orange County are the perfect jumping-off point for road trips and adventures.

Of course, one need not leave Newport Beach to have fun or find culture. The city is home to museums and cultural venues such as the Balboa Island Museum & Natural Historical Society and the Orange County Museum of Art.

For anyone seeking sporting venues rather than art galleries and museums, Orange County has two famous major league sports teams, with the MLB Angels and the MLH Ducks. Both teams play in venues in Anaheim, which is northeast of Newport Beach.

The beach cities of Orange County host annual surfing, skateboarding, golfing and beach volleyball competitions, too, so it is not just major league sports teams that offer exciting entertainment to residents.

The U.S. Open of Surfing is held in Huntington Beach, north of Newport. The only PGA event in Southern California, the Toshiba Classic, is held in Newport at the Newport Beach Country Club. A professional tennis team known as the Orange County Breakers also makes its home in Newport.
