Centurion is a medium-size city in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. The city sits between Pretoria and Midrand. A city that has had a lot of changes over the years, it was once called Verwoerdburg and before that, Lyttelton.   

About 236,000 people call this area home. Though it was once its own independent municipality, it is a part of the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality today.   

Centurion is at the intersection of two major highways, providing visitors and those who live here easy access to the surrounding region, including into Johannesburg. This community is also on the bank of the Hennops River, which flows through the center of town. 

Centurion was a small, rural community but has seen a significant amount of growth since 2000 when it became part of the Tshwane metro area. Since then, it has become one of the fastest-growing areas in the region.   

The community is a mix of residential homes, including luxury real estate, along with a larger business center. Centurion is also home to the Waterkloof Air Force Base, an airbase for the South African Air Force, and the Swartkop Air Force Base.

Centurion has a rich history that dates as far back as the 13th century. Interestingly, it was first settled by the Erasmus family, and today, many of the city’s suburbs are named after members of the family.

Some of the most notable locations for exploring the city’s heritage include the South African Air Force Museum, located on the Swarktop Air Force Base, and the Smuts House Museum, which is an excellent location to learn the history of the country.   

The Smuts Farm, where the museum sits, is also one of the most important arts and crafts centers in the area that includes a number of artisan markets.   

There are many other things to do throughout the city, including a visit to the lion park or taking a stroll along the Hennops River. Many enjoy spending time learning about the local community and culture in the Lesedi Cultural Village.  

Exploring the Sterkfontein Caves, which are a World Heritage site, can also be an excellent way to spend time. These caves, located 50km from the city, are where researchers found evidence of people living in the area for more than two million years.   

Other activities include exploring the Zwartkops Raceway, taking some time to try a few beverages at the Bavaria Brewery, where old-style beer brewing takes place, and spending time at the Doornkloof Farm. The Irene Trading Post is also an important cultural location to visit and a popular place for locals to spend time.   

Golf is a popular attraction here, especially the Copperleaf Golf and Country Estate, which hosts various events throughout the year as well as offers champion-style golf. For those looking for more lighthearted fun, the city is only minutes from Pretoria Zoo.
