Cascais, Portugal, is located on the Portuguese Riviera, an affluent coastal region west of Lisbon. There are total of just over 214,000 residents in the area. 

King Luis I of Portugal made Cascais popular in the 1870s by choosing to take up residence there every September. That brought out other members of the nobility, who formed a summer community.

There are 10 golf courses near Cascais, and the sport is growing throughout the region. Both residents and visitors can enjoy choosing one of the challenging courses to hone their golfing skills. 

Sailing events are often held at the marina, which opened in 1999 and offers 650 berths. Large events held there include the America's Cup boating race in 2011. Cascais has also hosted motorcycling and tennis events.  

The Gil Vicente theatre is another great place to visit in Cascais. Art galleries and museums are found throughout the city, offering everything from modern pieces to a look back at how the area developed and the richness of its history. Paintings, sculpture and information on historical figures are all available to see.
