Influential American think tank restored and listed by Riskin Partners
Solana estate listed for $39M.
MONTECITO, California (May 5, 2016) – Santa Barbara’s leading residential real estate team Riskin Partners, a luxury division of Village Properties Realtors, has listed Solana, a historic Montecito villa, for $39M. Solana, the original Frederick F. Peabody Estate built in 1916, is the former home of the prominent American think tank, the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions.
Solana's strong connection to social activism and political discourse began over 100 years ago. Her original owners were generous local and international philanthropists, notably rebuilding an entire French village destroyed by the Germans in WWII.
From 1958-1978 Solana was host to the influential think tank, the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions. Here, world leaders and scholars sought to “clarify the issues involved in maintaining a free and just society…and to advance the understanding of those issues by promoting discussion of them among the American people.” Guests and dignitaries included John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., Aldous Huxley, Henry Kissinger, and Kim Dae-jung, the former president of South Korea.
After years of neglect and disarray, Sandi and Bill Nicholson purchased Solana and embarked on a meticulous five-year renovation. Inside, the result of their vision is an exquisite residence with reverence to the estate’s unique pedigree and a gaze to the future that combines smart home technology and modern comforts. Outside, lush garden districts mingle effortlessly with 360° views of the Santa Ynez mountains, Pacific Ocean and city lights. Once again, Solana reigns proudly above the idyllic town of Santa Barbara, eagerly awaiting a new steward with whom to embark on the next chapter of her remarkable journey.
