Located in Saratoga, CA  •  Web ID: QICZ

Seven years in the design and construction! Just finished in 2008 with simply the best of everything. Designed and built by a Wine Country enthusiast for a Wine County enthusiast. Privately situated high above the Santa Clara Valley on fourteen acres in the Saratoga foothills on a private country road adjacent to the well known Mountain Winery originally built by Paul Masson, and the Mount Eden Vineyards said to produce some of the best Chardonnay wine in the New World. This three level estate or possible corporate retreat, boasts an approximately 1,000 square foot wine cellar and wine tasting room in the center of its approximately 13,400 square feet. Each of the six master bedroom suites has a sitting room and access to a deck or balcony. Old world craftsmanship is exhibited in the extensive use of limestone, marble, onyx and hard woods. There are three kitchens, two three-car garages and incredible views of the entire South Bay Area.

Historical Setting:
In the 1890’s Paul Masson, who was raised in the French town of Burgundy in the heart of France’s best wine country, was not satisfied with the quality of the grapes produced in the Santa Clara Valley floor. Masson set out to find the best location for growing grapes. After several years of searching Paul Masson said “ ...finally I found what I was looking for, in the foothills above Saratoga...these slopes face southeast, receiving morning and midday sunlight but mostly protected from the hottest sun, the heat that cooks the grapes in the afternoon. The hills are high enough above the valley to escape most of the valley fog that often sweeps in during the night from the ocean. Yet close enough to the ocean to get the cool nighttime breezes—though not so close that the vines would get washed out in heavy springtime coastal rains, or get cold and damp from summer fog. And the great oaks on the summit told me that the soil was good”. It is here that Chateau Mount Eden was built. Paul Masson was right! Chardonnay produced by the adjacent Mount Eden Vineyards has been recognized by some wine journalists as “…among the finest produced anywhere in the New World” and in 2006 the local Ridge Vineyards’ Cabernet was judged best over the French Bordeaux wines.
