Main Level: Formal Entertaining & Staff Quarters
Formal entry to the house from the street is through a stylish locked iron gate, up stately stairs with crushed limestone paving to a beautiful South garden with patios of Chinese jade slate and New England bluestone, two fountains, pergolas, walkways, seating, and a cascading 100 year old Mayten tree.
The impressive oak front door with leaded beveled glass, flanked by columns, opens to the reception foyer with niches, Venetian plaster walls and a magnificent system of arched and vaulted openings, with pilasters and entablatured crowns. The elegant, open elliptical staircase with custom wrought iron railings and a brass banister climbs to a rotunda on top of the fourth floor and to a stained glass elliptical dome modeled after Clinton Day’s famed City of Paris dome, employing the same style of German milky and amber stained glass. The stained glass light pattern is modeled after Michelangelo’s elliptical pattern in the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome.
To the right is a reception sized living room with 12 foot high coved ceilings with raised decorative geometric coffering, and ornate inlaid hardwood floors with intricate rosewood, walnut and mahogany inlay. The original window and door hardware are custom, cast-bronze elements in matching scroll with an egg and dart pattern. A sophisticated conversation grouping is placed near the grand fireplace with a carved marble mantle and black granite hearth.
Flow continues to a more intimate music room with a period chandelier and another marble fireplace where guests can gather around the piano and enjoy the bay view. The mahogany paneled Gentlemen’s Club room, that can be closed off with pocket doors, features a wet bar done in green marble, and provides the ideal spot for watching sporting events on a large screen TV.
An exquisitely appointed marble powder room with crystal light fixtures, Venetian plaster walls, and an intricate stone floor is conveniently located close by. The splendid formal dining room with a large Louis XVI marble fireplace and crystal chandelier overlooks the garden and is designed for elegant entertaining of large groups. The elevator, prominently located in the main hall, is conveniently positioned for service from both the catering kitchen below and the large family kitchen above. A butler’s pantry done in green stonework and outfitted with a Sub Zero icemaker, Wine Cooler, Miele dishwasher and stainless sink with a water filter, is useful for dining room service and comfort in the adjoining octagonal “garden room” with French doors leading outside. This room, beautifully situated for an office and library, is served by an exquisite half bath with a mosaic stone floor. A long gallery with coved ceilings, classic entablature, pilastered columnation and full-height domed sculpture niches, connects the front and back of the house. A separate apartment, The AuPair’s Suite, with its own kitchen and bathroom, is close to the rear staircase and has exterior access for separate entry.
Third Level: Private Family Living
Easily accessed via the handsome elevator from either the garage level or the main floor, or else reached by the elegant elliptical stair case or tradesman’s staircase, this comfortable floor provides gracious, but informal living. The south end of this beautiful open foyer has a beveled glass door, flanked by oval windows, leading to a balcony overlooking the garden.
The “great room” with inlaid hardwood floors, recessed speakers & lighting, and an iron chandelier centers around an impressive fireplace with a black granite hearth. French doors open to a romantic east-facing balcony. A wide doorway with pocket doors draws one even closer to the Alcatraz and bay views and leads to the spacious family dining room that is open to a stunning gourmet kitchen with “Costa Esmeralda” quartzite counters, center island, computer work station looking out to the garden through a glass interior wall. The elegant faux finished cabinetry with glass doors and appliance garage provide abundant storage.
Across the hall from the elevator and overlooking the garden, is the impressive guest bedroom with a marble fireplace, beautiful molding, recessed lighting and a chandelier. The adjoining bathroom, decorated with mahogany and Callacata del oro marble with a basket weave tile floor, features a Jacuzzi tub with a hand held as well as an overhead shower. The adjacent bedroom is octagonal and features another fireplace with original cast bronze surrounds and window seats overlooking the garden.
The rear hallway which gets light from interior glass walls, has original built- in storage and leads to a substantial powder room, done in Napoleon marble. At the end of the hall is a walk through bedroom/sitting room that is ideal for children’s play or an additional guest room as it has a closet and a lovely en-suite bathroom done with soft green toned tiles, a Carrera marble rimed tub with two showers, and pedestal sink. This room transitions to the light West Wing foyer with a crystal chandelier, and doors that open to a slate deck that is gas plumbed for outdoor heaters and convenient barbequeing and to a lovely path with seating leading down to the garden. The slate deck in the rear provides a private space for a hot tub. Another graceful circular staircase leads from the West Wing foyer up to the second level’s artist’s studio.
Fourth Level: Master Suite & Family Bedrooms
Staircase leading to Panoramic View Roof Deck. From the top floor foyer with curved book shelves, there is an amazing perspective of the elliptical dome, beveled glass views of the garden and the downward impression of the three story staircase.
A door opens to the luxurious huge master bedroom suite and a sunny sitting room that boasts views of Marin, Angel Island, the Bay, Alcatraz, Fort Mason, Russian Hill, San Francisco, and Berkeley. The large east-facing bedroom enjoys the cityscape and north views through the sitting room in addition to the warmth and grandeur of a marble fireplace with an ornately carved mantel. French doors with beveled glass open out to a balcony and connect with the out doors.
The sophisticated marble and mosaic master bathroom with a skylight looks out to the Bay and City, and is a suite in itself including a WC; a grand steam shower with a marble bench, mosaic floor and a pair of separately controlled showers with overhead and hand held fixtures. There are double sinks in mahogany cabinetry and a large Jacuzzi tub near a heated towel rack. The flow continues to the gentleman’s dressing area with hardwood floors: a corridor of closets opposite built- in drawers beneath granite counters.
Another door opens to the lady’s private bath with an additional bathtub, toilet, sink, and bidet. This bathroom opens to the ladies dressing room (optional bedroom) above the garden.
An exceptionally large family bedroom, in close proximity to the master suite, is served by an adjacent bathroom done in beige marble with black and red marble accents. The big tub has an overhead shower.
At the end of the hallway is another family bedroom with an en-suite bathroom done in soft beige tiles, a pedestal sink, and shower over the Carrera marble rimed tub.
A door opens to the second floor of the West Wing: A glorious artist’s studio with a glass vaulted ceiling, crystal chandelier, and clerestory windows providing incredible light.
A prominent “atrium” staircase, located in the rear hallway and easily accessible to the elevator, leads to the panoramic roof deck.
