Purportedly named by a surveyor for the fish he had been served while working in the area, the community had a population of about 250 residents. That little town, now known as Pompano Beach, is today a major city of over 100,000 people, and is fast approaching an event that few other cities in South Florida have experienced – its 100th birthday. In 1901, the United States Lighthouse Establishment persuaded Congress to authorize the construction of a lighthouse in the dark area between Jupiter Inlet and the Fowery Rocks Light. The Hillsboro Lighthouse was erected in 1907 and stands majestically at the Hillsboro Inlet, the body of water connecting the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean at the northern point of Pompano Beach. In the second half of the 20th century, this inlet became an increasingly busy waterway. Hillsboro Inlet Light is considered the most powerful light in the world with a beam that can be seen 28 miles The Lighthouse continues to operate as an indispensable navigational aid for mariners and ships along the east coast of Florida.

The city is currently in the middle of a multibillion dollar redevelopment process of its beachfront which promises to reinvent the city. There are numerous restaurants for every taste and a new shopping center, Pompano Beach City Centre. This is truly a piece of paradise.
