SPECTACULAR MARSH VIEWS IN SPRING ISLAND$3,400,000 (select currency) |
Driving across the causeway to Spring Island definitely begins to create anticipation of this exquisite property. Looking both left and right are endless salt water marsh views with abundant wildlife feeding in the tidal basin.
Little Neck Crossing is adjacent to Walker Landing, the community center of Spring Island that features the Nature Center with its staff of naturalists, the post office which doubles as a gathering place of the locals, the River House, equestrian center, pool and fitness areas, community docks and much, much more. With only a short walk or bike ride to these amenities, this property is extremely well located. However, it is far enough away to be exceptionally quiet - even when the activities are under way.
This family compound was designed by Jim Thomas not only to meet the owners needs and personality but to be in total harmony with the landscape and surrounds. The owners chose John Clements to complete the construction because of his execution capabilities. Once on the property, there is not a hint of a neighboring home. A nature curtain was strategically designed and implemented to give total privacy to this property.
The driveway approach is circular and adjoins both the main house and the guest cottage. It is built with a brick edge and shell driveway material as are the walkways. On the left of the path is a small fountain designed from imported pottery from Italy that is set on a circular brick base to complete the whimsical tropical feeling of the area surrounding the entryway.
The front porch is constructed of blue stone flooring. Hand split shake shingles used in the construction have been “dipped” so that all edges are sealed prior to installation. The roofing material is a standing seam metal and the gutters and downspouts are copper. Exterior colors are gray tone to continue and blend with the blue stone colors.
Upon entering the foyer, it takes awhile to absorb the magnificently designed and constructed floating curved stairway. The flooring in the entry is Ipie, a Brazilian walnut, that is an extremely hard wood that cannot be nailed. It must be drilled and then assembled on sight with each piece of the stairway and railing perfectly detailed and installed. The curved iron railings, forged by hand in Greenville, SC, are truly unique in design and function. It is difficult to imagine how they have been installed so perfectly into this space. The foyer chandelier was designed by a well noted designer who has been featured in “House Beautiful” as a top young designer and commissioned to be constructed by Craig Kavier in Louisville, KY.
To complete the flow from outdoors in, the living room also has blue stone flooring. The interior walls are a signature Jim Thomas design of random width vertical painted wood. The ceiling is vaulted and beamed. The wood-burning fireplace (with propane gas log lighter) is surrounded by black marble and a smooth blue stone hearth. Bookcases flank both sides of the fireplace. A large wall of windows incorporates the seemingly endless views.
A stairway leads off to the left towards a studio or fitness area with large walk-in attic storage.
The master suite is secluded off an angular wide walkway with no hint of its access from the main living area. It is comfortably inviting with large windows, vaulted ceiling, and a well-lighted master bath. The closet divides right and left to accommodate his and her dressing areas. The bath incorporates the use of blue stone both in the shower and floors giving added continuity to the design.
Outside the master suite is a large deck constructed of the Ipie lumber that is used in the interior. It features a hot tub that is privately tucked away from the world outside but enjoys extensive views, sunsets, and midnight skies.
A number of magnificent live oaks enhance the surroundings. The Chechessee Preserve is on the right with Pine Island beyond. The left side overlooks the Chechessee Golf Course, all encompassing dense wooded areas. A careful look in the far distance will uncover a glimpse of life on highway 170 without a hint of sounds except for the natural sounds of wildlife sharing the habitat.
The screened porch features the Thomas signature columns, also seen in the Old Tabby Links Clubhouse. They are bolted onto posts built into the foundation and extend up through the brick bases. These are just another example of the quality of construction and materials that have been built into this unique home.
The two story great room is located off the screened porch. Inclusive in the sale are a 42” plasma television, surround sound system, and built in speakers that extend into the entire home. Networking throughout the entire house is possible through “Smart Wiring”. A second large wood-burning fireplace with custom cabinetry also enhances this inviting area. A cozy breakfast area offers an area for family games and activities.
The kitchen is totally custom built with the best high-end appliances available. A Viking range and hood, Dacor wall oven and warming drawer, Advantium, Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer, Bosch dishwasher, and a 450 bottle wine cooler make this kitchen a gourmet’s delight.
The formal dining room has the Ipie wood flooring and is spacious enough for entertaining larger dinner parties or intimate family events. Elegant silk draperies enhance the over sized windows that overlook a natural view and are hung on a hand- forged drapery rod. The dining room is open to the entry and allows guests time to study the artistry of the elegant staircase. The chandelier was carefully chosen to intertwine the use of materials in the home and provide an understated quality that is evident throughout.
Off the side entry is a powder room decorated with a stunning embroidered silk wall covering and custom cabinetry that must be seen to be appreciated.
While ascending the stairway the magnificence of the construction is very evident. Upstairs, there are two well-designed guest suites designed to accommodate the most discriminating guests. To the left and down a hallway is the owner’s study with a high view to the long tidal marshes, a perfect setting for creativity or relaxation. The built in double desk areas are constructed of teak and they provide comfortable work areas that are further enhanced by large bookcases. While separated from the main living area, the study also overlooks the family activity center. The owner can choose as much privacy or as much involvement as desired.
The extra large two car garage provides plenty of storage for cars plus etcetera. Uniquely, the owners chose to build a service bath including shower off the garage – conveniently usable by any workmen at the property and for pet care.
The guest cottage features a front screened porch that opens to a cozy sitting area with kitchenette for guest comfort. It includes two additional guest suites, one down and one up for added privacy. Because this area is self contained, it could be used for long term living for extended family or caretakers, as well as short-term guests.
This property is well designed, painstakingly built with every attention to detail, and lovingly maintained by its present owners. A change of family needs has created an opportunity for a purchaser to consider this wonderfully unique home for a permanent residence or a retreat the entire family will love.
