HISTORY

Ballyknockane Lodge was built as a shooting lodge between 1866 and 1867 for the most noble the Marquis of Ormonde. The architect was Sir Thomas Newenham Deane and the contractor was Michael Broderick of Portlaw, Co. Waterford. In 1917, the estates of the Marquis of Ormonde in Tipperary totaled 5,630 acres including almost the whole of Slievenamon Mountain.

It was during the slow financial recovery of 1860’s, the Fenian movement, and the agrarian agitation, which continued to affect landowners adversely in rural areas ,culminating in the land war of 1879 to 1882, that country house building was virtually brought to a standstill. Surprisingly it was during this period that James Edward Butler, the Third Marquis of Ormonde built Ballyknockane Lodge at Ballypatrick. In December 1867, the publication, the Irish Builder presented a double page illustration of the new shooting lodge as it was being constructed. In the late 1950’s The Fifth Marquis moved to Ballyknockane after being forced to leave Kilkenny Castle due to an ever increasing taxation burden levied on the castle.

The property remained part of the Ormonde settled estates until 1979 when it was disposed of by private treaty. The sale was divided into four lots comprising the house on 52 acres, the coach house, 4,000 acres of mountain with sporting rights and 1,000 acres of land leased to the forestry commission.

The property subsequently benefited from considerable works and improvements, including the addition of three cottages and the upgrading of the converted coach house.
