Over $2 million has been carefully spent to restore every inch of this home. It has all the original heartpine floors, doors and Italian Carrera marble fireplaces. Where Pitt Street meets Wentworth is a home imbued with history, architectural style and grace. It is of equal parts elegance and comfort. It was meticulously restored by skilled artisans. Created in the Greek Revival style with Italianate touches, the exterior of the home is full of fine architectural details: a lime washed brick exterior with brownstone embellishments, original purple slate roof, a two-story piazza with Ionic and Corinthian columns and an attached two-story wing that originally housed the kitchen, servants' quarters, stables and carriages.
Henry Gerdts, a German immigrant and wholesale grocer, this home on Pitt Street in 1859. Gerdts deeded the Italiante revival side hall dwelling to his three unmarried daughters. The last of the Gerdts descendants sold the house in 1956. The house was purchased by the Lemacks family. During their residency, portions of the main house and the attached carriage/kitchen house were converted to apartments. The home was sold to the Historic Charleston Foundation in 2004, which in turn looked for a buyer that would be sensitive to the house's historic nature. Preservation Partners LLC purchased the house from the Foundation in 2005, with the intent of returning the main house to a single family dwelling and retaining two apartments in the carriage/kitchen house. The house is fabulous, new plumbing, electrical, HVAC every inch is restored beautifully. Easements have been put on the property to maintain the property as it was in 1859.
