Built circa 1900, the General Stephen Bull house is located amidst Beaufort's most iconic historic homes on the bluff overlooking the Beaufort harbor and downtown. The History of Beaufort

Historic Beaufort, South Carolina, drew interest from early Spanish and French explorers during the 16th and 17th centuries for its prime location at the head of one of the largest natural harbors on the Atlantic Coast. The permanent settlement at Beaufort was established by the English in 1711. A planned city, the town is laid out in a grid pattern with roads running parallel and perpendicular to the bay. Bay Street is at the heart of the city's historic commercial district, and the buildings that house today's shops and galleries once operated as wharfs, mills, and mercantiles to serve the surrounding Sea Islands. A dramatic bluff rises to the west of Bay Street's commercial area, and it is here that some of Beaufort's most grand homes are positioned.
