Built circa 1900, the General Stephen Bull house is located amidst Beaufort's most iconic historic homes on the bluff overlooking the Beaufort harbor and downtown. Visitors to this grand home enter from one of two Savannah Grey brick staircases located at the front and rear of the home. The wide south-facing front porch, perfect for entertaining and enjoying views of the river, opens into a large formal living room with an original fireplace and high ceilings. To the right is a formal dining room, also with fireplace and original moldings. Both of these light-filled rooms feature large windows and original pine floors. A wide central hallway leads to a breakfast room, adjacent kitchen, and large utility room. The kitchen occupies the north east corner of the first floor and overlooks the curving driveway and large backyard. A cypress-paneled den provides informal living space at the rear of the house. An oversized brick fireplace with a beautifully detailed mantel and built-in cabinets and bar add character to this inviting space. Two full bathrooms are located on this main level. This home also has a full basement, a rarity in the Lowcountry. Upstairs are four large bedrooms, each with a bath, original pine floors, and large windows. There are two master suites with water views and southern exposure. Upstairs is accessed by one of two staircases. Two large walk-in closets provide extra storage on the second floor landing.
The History of Beaufort
Historic Beaufort, South Carolina, drew interest from early Spanish and French explorers during the 16th and 17th centuries for its prime location at the head of one of the largest natural harbors on the Atlantic Coast. The permanent settlement at Beaufort was established by the English in 1711. A planned city, the town is laid out in a grid pattern with roads running parallel and perpendicular to the bay. Bay Street is at the heart of the city's historic commercial district, and the buildings that house today's shops and galleries once operated as wharfs, mills, and mercantiles to serve the surrounding Sea Islands. A dramatic bluff rises to the west of Bay Street's commercial area, and it is here that some of Beaufort's most grand homes are positioned. With commanding views of the harbor and the Intracoastal Waterway, these homes capture the prevailing southern breezes and occupy the most sought after location in town. 1305 Bay Street is one of these iconic homes and offers a rare opportunity to own a piece of Beaufort's history. A very short walk to the downtown marina and day dock provide access to the Beaufort River that bends just in front of this magnificent property.
