Charles N. Vilas, successful hotelier and philanthropist, built the Manor on the Hill as his retreat from NYC.  It became not only the place for him to spend his golden years but a place where he would continue his unselfish works.  Within the nearly 80 acres of land, you have three Residences, Recreation Hall, Carriage House with Stable, Barn, almost 2000 feet of direct river frontage, swimming pool, tennis court, spectacular views, sloping open fields, brilliant sunsets and calm breezes across the hill top. Mr. Vilas was the owner of the famous Fifth Avenue Hotel during the late 1800's. When he sold the hotel in 1900 he decided to create his version of Mt. Vernon in Alstead and built the Manor on the Hill.  Using his NYC resources to provide the timeless architecture and materials, Mr. Vilas became the largest employer in the area, creating a magnificent project, building the most secluded yet sophisticated property the region had ever seen. When you drive onto the estate, you are in awe. Passing through large granite gates, you see a stunning Georgian Mansion built completely fireproof with brick, marble, cement and steel I beams.

Lighting the entrance is a Pillar Light taken from the Fifth Avenue Hotel.  From there, you are captivated by the sweeping horseshoe driveway lined with enormous evergreens, willows and NYC street lights leading you to the spectacular Victorian Mansion.  Once you are at the top of the hill and standing on the summer porch, the refreshing breezes and breathtaking views will invigorate your soul. The present owners have painstakingly restored the estate to its original grandeur and have been enjoying every aspect of this exalted hideaway since they purchased the property in 1960. Only a two hour scenic drive from Boston and four hours from NYC, you can enjoy the richness of the city but the ease of the country.  You have great access to the entire upper valley infrastructure and every outdoor activity at your doorstep.  For the most discerning buyer, this is the perfect getaway or permanent residence. The Manor on the Hill photos will provide you with a realistic insight into the splendor of this special property.
