About 8 mi from downtown Durango, this little gem sits on 5 acres in the lush Animas Valley. The main house and six cottages surround a flower-bedecked pond, complete with friendly geese. Cherrywood antiques, fluffy feather beds, and handcrafted armoires add a graceful touch to the handsome rooms. In the evening, relax on your cottage swing, enjoying views of the surrounding cliffs. The owners' experience at European cooking schools is evident in the breakfasts -- and in the "train cookies" sometimes sent along with guests who make the journey to Silverton. www.appleorchardinn.com. 4 rooms, 6 cottages. Not a single detail has been overlooked at the Beaumont. Owners Dan and Mary King received a 2004 Preserve America Presidential Award for their painstaking restoration of the 1886 hotel, a gold-rush era landmark that had stood vacant for 34 years. But they didn't just get the historical details right. Soundproof, individually decorated rooms, deep soaking tubs, and a spa are among the thoroughly modern features that make this such a relaxing place to stay. The outdoor patio area has heated floors, meaning that you can enjoy the stunning views of the Ampitheater Range on chilly mornings. Tundra Restaurant ($$$-$$$$) is grand, with a cathedral ceiling and a balcony (where a classical guitarist plays in the evenings). Local ingredients, wild game, and fresh fish are well matched by the stellar wine list. Don't miss the to-die-for risotto. www.beaumonthotel.com. 10 rooms, 2suites. In-room: DVD, VCR, dial-up, Wi-Fi. In a curious contradiction, this ultramodern lodging that is all gleaming glass and sleek surfaces bears the name of one of the town's oldest mines. Fireplaces keep the rooms toasty on winter evenings. There are plenty of nice touches, including stereos and CD players. Each sumptuous, individually furnished room contains a gas fireplace, brass or mahogany bed, and cherrywood antiques or good-quality reproductions. William Jennings Bryan delivered his rousing "Cross of Gold" speech here in 1896, garnering a presidential nomination in the process. The brick walls are covered with old tintypes, creating just the right mood. Rounding out the decor are antiques such as fringed lamps, marble-top dressing tables, and red velour love seats. Gingerbread trim gives this turreted Victorian-style inn a fanciful feeling. Pristine mountain light streams into the rooms, which are warmly accented with whitewashed-oak woodwork. Rooms have brass beds covered with handmade quilts and tables and chairs crafted by local artisans. The stained-glass windows over the oversize tubs are a nice touch. Owners Alicia Bixby and Keith Hampton are overachievers; they also run a marketing firm in town, sponsor the annual wine festival, and raise two young children, but they still find time to mingle with the guests. Condo rentals are also available. www.sansophia.com. 16 rooms. In-room: no a/c, VCR. AE, MC, V. Closed early Apr.-early May and 2 wks in Nov. Full breakfast.

The grand dame of Durango's hotels opened for business in 1887, and a loving restoration has restored her luster. Inside, the Diamond Belle Saloon glitters with crystal chandeliers, beveled-glass windows, rustic oak beams, flocked wallpaper, and plush velvety curtains. The individually decorated rooms are swooningly exquisite: after all, the hotel owns the country's largest collection of Victorian walnut antiques and has its own wood-carving shop to create exact period reproductions. Your room might have entertained Butch Cassidy, Louis L'Amour (he wrote The Sacketts here), Francis Ford Coppola, John Kennedy, or Marilyn Monroe (the latter two stayed here at separate times). www.strater.com. 93 rooms. It's only an hour's drive to Durango, but this family-owned and -operated guest ranch, nestled in the Upper Pine River Valley, on the borders of the Piedra and Weminuche Wilderness Areas, might as well be a lifetime away. The riding programs are the main attraction here; guests are individually matched with horses to fit their experience and comfort level. It's not all riding, however. Other activities include hiking, rafting, water skiing at Vallecito Lake, and fishing. Personal attention and a family atmosphere ensure a loyal return clientele. Cozy log cabins, complete with gas stoves, modern baths, and terry robes, are arranged in a semicircle around the main lodge, campfire ring, and pool; Cordon Bleu-trained chefs are at the helm in the dining room, which has views of the mountains and busy hummingbird feeders through large picture windows. www.wildernesstrails.com. 10 cabins.
