This stark white resort on 34 acres is one of the grandest in the desert. Standard rooms, large even by local standards, come with furnished patios or balconies and separate living and sleeping areas; they're decorated in warm desert golds and greens. Private villas have secluded garden courtyards with outdoor whirlpool tubs, living rooms with fireplaces, dining rooms -- and private butlers who attend to your every whim. The pool area is a kind of garden water park, surrounded by palms and private cabanas. Despite all of its resorty trappings, the Hyatt actually caters to business travelers, not vacationers. www.grandchampions.hyatt.com. 426 rooms, 54 suites. In-room: safe, ethernet, dial-up, Wi-Fi. In-hotel: 4 restaurants, room service, bars, golf courses, tennis courts, pools, gym, spa, bicycles, children's programs (ages 3-12), laundry service, public Internet, no-smoking rooms, minibar. Opened in 1926 (and now a member of the Waldorf-Astoria Collection), the desert's oldest resort is a lush green oasis. Broad expanses of lawn separate the adobe casitas that house some rooms; other rooms are in newer two-story units surrounding individual swimming pools and hot tubs amid brilliant gardens. Fireplaces, stocked refrigerators, and fruit-laden orange trees contribute to a luxurious ambience. A premium is placed on privacy, which accounts for La Quinta's continuing popularity with Hollywood celebrities. You can play on the championship golf courses either at La Quinta or at the adjacent PGA West. www.laquintaresort.com. 640 rooms, 244 suites. In-room: safe (some), refrigerator, dial-up. The most secluded and the quietest resort in the desert, the Lodge frequently hosts politicians and celebrities. Originally a Ritz-Carlton, this hilltop hotel, perched high above the Coachella Valley, is being transformed into a casually elegant destination as rooms are redecorated with lots of chrome, glass, mirrors, and bright primary colors in stark contrast to the gold fabrics and crystal that remains in public areas from its days as the Ritz. Spacious rooms have mountain, pool or valley views; Frette linens; and private balconies or patios. Service is thoughtful and impeccable. www.ranchomirage.rockresorts.com. 219 rooms, 21 suites. A world apart from Palm Springs' pulsating urban village, the area's most exclusive resort occupies 400 pristine desert acres, surrounded by mountains and quiet desert vistas. A laid-back genteel retreat since the mid-1930s for some of the world's foremost families, including Walt Disney, it still provides a quietly luxurious experience reminiscent of the Old West. A collection of simple cottages is spread among manicured desert gardens and shaded by smoke trees.
