South-facing suites have the best views overlooking the L.A. skyline, and on a clear day you can see as far as the Pacific. Views are also spectacular from the rooftop pool and hot tub. Sink into a chair at the low-rise reception desk to check in. Weekend nights, there's live jazz in the hotel's view-rich restaurant -- Ten20. Ever since its opening in 1912, the "Pink Palace" has attracted Hollywood's elite. Standard rooms are also nothing to sniff at, with original artwork, butler service, Frette linens and duvets, walk-in closets, and huge marble bathrooms. The Chateau's swank exterior disguises its lurid place in Hollywood history -- many remember it as the scene of John Belushi's fatal overdose in 1982, and in 2004 controversial photographer Helmut Newton died in a car crash on his way out of the hotel. Actors like Johnny Depp and Keanu Reeves appreciate the hotel for its secluded cottages, bungalows, and understated suites and penthouses. The interior is 1920s style, although some of the decor looks dated rather than vintage. A mammoth Moreton Bay fig tree dwarfs the main entrance of this sprawling place. Residential-style bungalows, built between 1920 and 1946, are extremely private and a favorite of visiting VIPs. Standard rooms in the 10-story tower have no room to spare, but they do come with beautiful ocean views, alabaster light fixtures, carved wood armoires, Bose stereo systems, and down duvets. Desks and multiline phones could help you be productive, but the happening social scene in the lobby will certainly distract. The Asia de Cuba restaurant is known for its amazing views, sparkling cocktails, and scads of beautiful people. Soak up the sun by the fifth-floor pool with its fully outfitted cabanas or sip afternoon tea in the living room under ornate chandeliers. Belvedere, the hotel's flower-filled restaurant, is a lunchtime favorite for film business types. A renovation in 2006 gave the hotel a cool lounge from nightclub impresario Rande Gerber, a spa specializing in thalassotherapy (seawater-based treatments), and a 24-hour fitness center. Guest rooms went from Provençal flourishes to a cool urban look, all grays and blacks, with Hollywood Regency-style furniture, flat-screen TVs, and frosted-glass sliding doors leading to the bathrooms. Blond wood paneling sets off the feather duvet-topped beds.
