The city has played a vital role in many of the most significant events in American history. Charles Towne, originally named for England’s Charles II, was the first city in the North American colonies to put history on display when it opened the first American museum in 1773. After being involved in many pivotal episodes in the American Revolution, the city was officially renamed Charleston after the British withdrew in 1783.
Less than a century after the British were defeated, the city was the site of the first shots fired in the American Civil War, when Citadel cadets trained their muskets on a Union ship as it entered Charleston’s harbor. After years of fierce battle, the once thriving city full of landmarks recalling America’s genesis - churches, some of the first commercial institutions, grand plantations and early luxury homes - was left in ruin and remained occupied by Union forces as it was rebuilt.
Through all the turbulent times in this city’s history, Charleston has persevered. Many historical buildings remain standing, and the city has been dubbed “The Holy City” due a high concentration of well-known houses of worship of many denominations. Religious diversity serves as a symbol of the city’s welcoming atmosphere. In today’s Charleston the word civil refers more to its well-mannered citizens, than the horrors of a destructive war. Visitors of the fine city are treated with the utmost courtesy as they stroll the oak-lined streets.
To ensure its friendly and refined reputation, Charleston became the first
(and is still the only) city in America with a Livability Court- which enforces
community codes and standards. And the standards here are most certainly high.
Good natured locals, a waterfront location, a growing business community and
a mix of the historic along with a thriving luxury home market make Charleston
a dream destination for visitors and new residents alike.
