About Alexandria
Alexandria is an independent city in northern Virginia that is known for its role as host to a number of government agencies, particularly those related to national defense. Directly across the Potomac River from Washington D.C., this city of 140,000 has also attracted a multitude of residents who are employed by the federal government and, as a result, has become increasingly urbane and sophisticated. For many high level administrators, private contractors, and elected officials, its stately roads and quiet streets have become a welcome place of refuge from their often demanding duties. This connection to America's leadership is appropriate, of course, given that the lots for Alexandria's 'Old Town' neighborhood were originally surveyed and laid out by a young George Washington, while many other notable Virginians, including the storied Lee family, held family estates in the area for generations. Today's Alexandria, however, is not dedicated entirely to the past, though the majestic Georgian, Federal, and Second Empire homes that populate its older areas are particularly well preserved. Relatively newer developments, including the upscale Rosemont and North Ridge neighborhoods, are noted for the manner in which their more contemporary-looking housing stock seamlessly blends in with the historic nature of the area. Likewise, the concentration of intelligence and military agencies in the area has ensured that Alexandria's citizens remain among the best educated and tech-savvy in the nation, a fact that is immediately noticed, and appreciated, when visiting the many local boutiques and dining establishments that are equipped with every imaginable modern amenity.
