Estepona, simply put, is real Spain. The town, whose dimly defined origins stretch back to the time of the Romans, possesses a number of landmarks that date to the Reconquista, including the weathered ruins of San Luis Castle, however the living aspects of its culture are what define it as authentically Spanish. An example of that most iconic of all Iberian structures, the bullfighting ring, sits securely near the center of its ‘Old Town’, while locally crafted leather goods and clothing are sold at various traditional small markets as well as the large Carrefour plaza that has been built up near its outskirts. No true Andalusian town would be complete without a magnificent church, however, and Estepona’s Santa Maria de los Remedios fits the bill for a picturesque house of worship perfectly. Combined with a variety of ancient festivals, including the Virgen del Carmen, San Isidro Labrador, Ferias y Fiestas Mayores, and Quema de los bigotes de San Juan celebrations, these and other aspects make Estepona a perfect place to experience all the joy and sense of community that is integral to the character of southern Spain. What makes this sunny, coastal town wonderful, though, is the way it welcomes people from outside Spain, whether they’re tourists or individuals who are interested in yearlong residency. Located near the famed Rock of Gibraltar, Estepona hosts a number of English-speaking businesses and, due to its proximity to Gibraltar’s international airport, can be easily accessed by Londoners. Likewise, the proximity of the luxurious Puerto Banus marina attracts yachters from throughout the world, while its Playa del Cristo and Costa Natura beaches, which stretch for a combined 21km, are perennial favorites. Though its night life is a bit quieter than other ‘Costa del Sol’ locations, for which it is especially prized by those seeking a more relaxing and reflective atmosphere, Estepona is nevertheless also noted for the quality of its many restaurants and entertainment venues. Whether they desire the peace of mind that comes with life in a friendly, traditional Spanish town or simply attracted to the perpetual warmth and happiness that is synonymous with the Andalusian coastline, Estepona offers all someone can hope for, and more.
