About Portland
Known internationally as the "City of Roses", Portland, Oregon's population of just under 600,000, the third largest city in the Pacific Northwest. A location at the confluence of the Columbia and Willamette rivers has, since its 1845 founding, also made Portland one of the great economic and cultural crossroads in the world, with a port that is even today ranked among the most important in terms of agricultural exports. The city's business status, however, is far from being the only attribute that has attracted a young and vibrant following, as its famously detailed land planning policies have enabled Portland to grow without the problems associated with urban congestion or sprawl. Indeed, with an expansive light rail public transportation system and a number of modern industries, including those in the electronics field, Portland is consistently ranked as one of the most 'green' cities in the world. This is a fitting title given that a substantial amount of area within the overall metro area, which includes 2,260,000 residents, is dedicated to large public and private gardens. Due to a beneficial and mild Marine West Climate, these gardens play a major role in the cultivation of flowering plants. Portland's International Rose Test Garden, alone, accounts for 7,000 plants in over 550 varieties, including original lines that have been meticulously developed for worldwide export. When combined with a low crime rate and a school system that offers high teacher to student ratios, the city's meticulously planned landscape, commuter-friendly transportation network, and balanced density make Portland a truly great place to live.
