Belize is a small country located in Central America. Unlike many other Latin American countries, its official language is English, although Spanish is very common as well. This country is home to some beautiful rain forest areas and has a rich history thanks to the original Mayan inhabitants. This civilization settled the area that is now Belize around 1500 BC.
When the Spanish explorers first found this land, they claimed it as a territory, but did not heavily populate it because of the lack of gold and other valuables. This has preserved historical sites in Belize much better than in some other areas of Central America. In the late 17th century, British settlers started moving here, hence the official language being English here. This gives Belize a rich and varied history. There are many different types of cuisine that stem from here—also thanks to the many different types of people that call this area home.
