About Bronxville
It may be hard to imagine, but just 15 miles north of Manhattan there exists a place where bicyclists have a major road all to themselves on Sundays during the warm parts of the year, where kayakers and canoeists can ford gently coursing ponds, streams, and manageable, though picturesque, waterfalls, and where pedestrians can cross a number of antique foot ridges while hiking out toward casual nature studies. This little sample of nature, though within a brief commute to one of the world's most important cities, nevertheless exists within the wealthy village of Bronxville. A part of the overall Town of Eastchester, Bronxville sports a number of beautiful parks and recreational areas, including the Bronxville Parkways Reservation. The Parkway itself, from April to June and then again from September to October, is closed to motor traffic for "Bicycle Sunday" while, during the rest of the year, nature lovers can access what are often described as the best open areas within a short drive of New York City. With a median family income of $200,000 and population of 6,323, Bronxville is also known for comfortable living and friendly, sociable, and highly educated residents that, at different times, have included noted writers like Don Delillo and beloved television personalities like Jack Paar. As an early center of the Arts and Crafts movement, Bronxville also features a number of homes and other structures that were designed by both famous and casual architects, including the famed 'Owl House' and the Gramatan Hotel. In appearance and construction, however, the various estates that have been built in the area over the generations work well together, and even today the numerous large Tudor Revival and Georgian properties that grace its parkways combine to form a pleasing aesthetic.
