About Carmel
One of America's fastest growing cities, Carmel, Indiana, has seen its fortunes rise sharply along with those of neighboring Indianapolis in recent years. Due to the wealth that has flooded into the area following the completion of the local Meridian Corridor, which hosts over 40 major corporations, many of Carmel's features have only been completed within the last decade. These include 'The Palladium' at The Center for the Performing Arts, the Art and Design District, and a Japanese garden that is located south of city hall and is easily accessed by the popular Monon Trail. Natural features, like the artesian springs at Flowing Well Park, have been a part of Carmel's character since this city of 79,191 was founded in 1874, however. Other landmarks, including the Clay Terrace, an outdoor lifestyle center that is oriented toward upscale boutiques, fine dining, and art galleries, continue to attract visitors from throughout central Indiana. Since Carmel's expansion only began in earnest after the 1980s, the area is also known for large, contemporary homes that offer sweeping, landscaped lawns and gardens as well as modern amenities and excellent public services. Somewhat humorously, given that it installed one of the nation's first operating traffic lights in 1924, Carmel is also often referred to as the 'roundabout capital of the world' due to the number carefully planted and maintained roundabouts that anchor its major thoroughfares.
