Berry Hill Estate, an historic property set on over 23 acres in Newport, Rhode Island, was recently sold. Prominent architectural firm McKim, Mead & White designed the 1887-built estate that remains intact as a fine example of their classic style. Included among the firm’s many other notable works are the Rhode Island State House, Boston Public Library, and a renovation of the White House during Theodore Roosevelt’s presidency.

Luxury Portfolio member Lila Delman Real Estate listed and sold Berry Hill – the first time the remarkable property has been sold since its construction well over a century ago. A few months ago, the Luxury Portfolio team was led on a fantastic guided tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House just south of downtown Chicago. Seeing and hearing about the rich history of the home up-close was a fun and educational experience. In his 1932 autobiography, Wright described Coonley House in Riverside, Illinois as his “best house”. Original tile floors were cleaned by hand, updated mechanicals were integrated to fit within Wright’s design, cabinets were preserved and restored, colors and textures were researched and matched, and a 50-foot living room mural was recreated by artisans using a small piece that remained. One of just 18 homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in California, the Fawcett House in Los Banos is currently listed at $1,999,999 by Alain Pinel Realtors. The mid-century modern home was designed by Wright in the 1950s, during the time he was also working on the famed Guggenheim Museum in New York City. A cantilevered roof juts out from the u-shaped home above the pool in a striking reflection of the triangle theme throughout Fawcett House. Unique 60 and 120-degree angles within the architectural work of art both enclose and open up spaces.

Coonley House and Fawcett House are extraordinary examples of Wright’s visionary design and beautifully showcase the work of a true artist.
